The ISOL Process

At the ISOLDE isotope separator on-line (ISOL) radioactive ion beam facility, a wide variety of radioactive species are produced in a thick target during its bombardment by a high-energy (up to 1.4 GeV) proton beam. The illustration above highlights the main stages of radioactive ion beam production at ISOLDE and other, similar, radioactive ion beam (RIB) facilities. For more information see the  ISOLDE website.
